Aliamanu Drama Club Raising Funds To Cool Down

On any given afternoon, you can find the students of Aliamanu Middle School Drama Club in their portable classroom rehearsing plays, both classic and contemporary. During the last 7 years the club has performed great classics such as Romeo & Juliet and Macbeth, and contemporary favorites including Grease, High School Musical I, Hairspray and last year’s performance of Mamma Mia. Yet over the course of the school year, the classroom gets stuffy, humid and downright hot. Drama Director, Norma Combs says, “The club is in one of the portable classrooms on the hill and boy, is it hot! I teach special education English and one drama class. My poor students suffer at the beginning and ending of the school year, when it’s soooo hot and humid.”

Yes, we feel it, too. Manolo Morales, roving reporter extrodinaire of  KHON, interviewed the group about their heatwave rehearsals.

This season, the drama club will perform Romeo & Juliet with a twist; all the music will pay tribute to the King of Pop. AMS Drama Club started a Thrill The World event at their school to raise awareness about their need for a new portable air conditioner. As of press time, they still need to raise another $400. If you or someone you know would like to donate to their effort, please contact Norma Combs at 808.853.7672. Whew!
